When Anger Becomes Chronic
For some individuals, the fight response is triggered more easily. This can happen when someone has experienced trauma, chronic stress, high-pressure environments, or emotional invalidation. Over time, the nervous system becomes sensitised — scanning constantly for threat.
In these cases, anger may feel disproportionate or difficult to control. Small frustrations trigger large reactions. Irritability becomes frequent. Relationships may suffer.
This does not mean someone is “an angry person.” It means their nervous system has learned to stay on alert.
Unprocessed stress and emotional buildup can also contribute. Anger often sits on top of other emotions such as fear, hurt, shame, or helplessness. When these underlying emotions are not acknowledged, anger becomes the most accessible outlet.

While the stress response is automatic, what happens next can be influenced with awareness and skill.
Anger management is not about suppressing anger. Suppression often leads to emotional shutdown or explosive reactions later. Instead, it involves learning to:

Slow down the physiological response

Communicate needs assertively
Build emotional regulation skills
By understanding anger as a survival response rather than a flaw, people can approach it with curiosity instead of shame.
Moving From Reaction to Response
The goal is not to eliminate anger. It is to move from automatic reaction to intentional response.
