Trauma, PTSD and Adjustment
At MLA Psychology, we recognise the complex ways in which trauma can influence various facets of one’s life, from emotional well-being to interpersonal relationships. We are committed to facilitating the healing process through evidence-based therapeutic interventions.
MLA Psychology is dedicated to providing individualised, compassionate, and evidence-based treatment options to help you or your loved ones heal from the life-altering effects of trauma.
Trauma-Informed Care:
At MLA Psychology, we deeply understand the profound impact trauma can have on both emotional well-being and interpersonal relationships. Our approach is rooted in creating a secure and empathetic environment, where you can feel safe to explore and heal from your experiences.
Expertise in Trauma Treatment:
Our skilled psychologists are proficient in a variety of evidence-based methods, tailored to support your journey through and beyond traumatic experiences.
EMDR as a Gold Standard Modality:
EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing) is recognised as the gold standard in trauma treatment by Medicare. It holds the highest recommendation across most clinical practice guidelines, including the Veterans Affairs/Department of Defense (VA/DoD) Clinical Practice Guideline for Management of PTSD, the International Society for Traumatic Stress Studies (ISTSS), the United Kingdom’s National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE), and the Australian National Health and Medical Research Council.
The American Psychological Association (APA) has given EMDR a conditional rating. This therapy involves bilateral stimulation, such as guided eye movements or tactile sensations, to assist in reprocessing traumatic memories, reducing emotional distress, and promoting adaptive coping strategies.
Comprehensive Therapeutic Options:
Beyond EMDR, we offer an array of therapeutic techniques including Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), mindfulness-based practices, and specific trauma-focused interventions. This diverse toolkit allows us to create customised treatment plans that resonate with your individual experiences and healing preferences.
Compassionate Support:
Whether you are dealing with the aftermath of a single traumatic event or the enduring effects of chronic trauma, our team is here to provide you with compassionate, professional support. We are dedicated to guiding you toward a path of recovery and helping you adjust to a new sense of normalcy with strength and resilience.
Empowering and Personalised Approach:
At MLA Psychology, we tailor EMDR therapy to each individual’s needs, focusing not just on symptom management but on empowering clients towards complete healing and recovery.
EMDR Therapy Process:
EMDR therapy at MLA Psychology involves a structured eight-phase process over multiple sessions, each lasting between one and 90 minutes. The phases include:
- Patient History and Information Gathering: Understanding your background and specific traumatic events or memories.
- Preparation and Education: Educating about EMDR and providing tools for emotional management.
- Assessment: Identifying themes, specific memories, negative beliefs from trauma, and desired positive beliefs.
- Desensitisation and Reprocessing: Activating memories and guiding you through reprocessing them.
- Installation: Focusing on instilling a positive belief while processing a memory.
- Body Scan: Identifying physical sensations and tracking symptom reduction.
- Closure and Stabilisation: Ensuring calmness and safety post-session and discussing between-session expectations.
- Reevaluation and Continuing Care: Reviewing progress and adjusting future therapy goals.
